SUMMARY:PFI: Oats and Drones
DESCRIPTION:Joe Rowe returned to farming in 2008 after growing up on a row crop farm but stepping away for a decade of schooling and other pursuits. Since then\, he has farmed with a dedication to being curious and continually improving. He started strip-tilling and cover cropping in 2015 and has since adapted his fertilizer program to include variable-rate and drone applications\, biologicals in the furrow and Y-drop application to balance nitrogen needs. \n  \nAs an investor in Green Acres Milling\, Joe has added oats into his rotation with corn and soybeans. An active participant in PFI’s Cooperators’ Program\, he is trialing two clover mixes interseeded with his oats. Joe is excited to show how he uses a drone for topdressing\, fungicide and herbicide applications and share how extended rotation is building resiliency on his farm.

SUMMARY:PFI: Expanding Cover Crop Impact: Seed Production and Reduced Inputs
DESCRIPTION:Chad and Wendy Petersen raise corn\, soybeans and cattle near Bennett\, Iowa. They practice minimum tillage and use cover crops on their own farm\, and they appreciate seeing more farmers integrating soil health practices. Chad and Wendy are passionate about expanding cover crops on the landscape: In addition to using cover crops on their own farm\, they also run a cover crop seeding business\, Venture Ag. \n  \nRecently\, the Petersens began looking at their fertilizer use. This focus has enabled them to reduce their applied phosphorus and nitrogen by 25%. Chad is eager to share how these strategies are helping the couple achieve their stewardship goals while maintaining yields and economic resilience. At this field day\, we’ll also see a field of rye going to seed for the farm’s cover crop use come fall.

SUMMARY:PFI: Trying and Promoting Soil Health and Water Quality Practices in Northern Iowa
DESCRIPTION:Derek Young is a fourth-generation farmer who began farming in 1993 with his father and grandfather\, running a soybean\, corn and cattle operation. He strip-tills over half of his corn acres and no-tills most of his soybean acres while also maintaining conventional fields. He has covers flown on in the fall on over 1\,000 acres\, and drills rye on corn acres that are chopped for silage. \n  \nThis year\, Derek injected hog manure into his rye cover crop that’s going into corn\, and he’s hoping to cut back on nitrogen application in that field. Derek is also part of the Northwest Iowa Ag Stewardship Alliance\, a farmer-led group that promotes soil health and water quality in the region. At this field day\, learn about cover crops and reduced tillage\, hear a panel of farmers discuss their involvement with NIASA and more.

SUMMARY:PFI: Starting a Cover Crop Business\, Flying Drones and Seeding Covers
DESCRIPTION:Mark and Brenda Kingland farm on 1\,700 acres in Winnebago County\, Iowa. Eight years ago\, they began strip-tilling to change efficiency in their fertilizer program and improve soil health. In 2022\, Mark added a drone on his farm to apply cover crops and do precision spraying. His goal is to have a cover crop mix flown on by early September into standing corn and soybeans. \n  \nMark’s son-in-law\, Stuart McCulloh\, and daughter\, Sara McCulloh\, have found their roles on the farm since moving back to the area in 2024. Stuart completed the Cover Crop Business Accelerator program through PFI last year and has found opportunities to use the drone to add diversity to the farm’s income. At this field day\, you’ll see drone demonstrations for different applications and gain insight to the systems approach of the operation.

SUMMARY:PFI: Considering Cover Crops? Species\, Mixes and Support To Meet Your Farm’s Needs
DESCRIPTION:Eric Fara grew up in Shelby County\, Iowa\, where his family raised crops for seed and his grandpa ran a grain elevator through which he sold the seed. About 25 years ago\, they started raising wagyu cattle and grazing them on cover crops when possible. Eric felt a strong pull back to the farm after completing his education. To find his niche in the family operation\, he started doing custom cover crop application using the cleaned rye and oat seed. \n  \nCome to the Fara family’s field day to see plots of various cover crop species and mixes. You’ll hear about opportunities for cost-share to support adding cover crops. Eric is also excited to share how he has grown his custom seeding business to more than 1\,600 acres of cover crops\, plus some alfalfa and land in the Conservation Reserve Program.

SUMMARY:PFI: Grazing for a Goal
DESCRIPTION:Karl Palmberg’s Larchwood\, Iowa\, farm has been in his family since 1938. But when he left for college\, the operation was mothballed and put into hibernation. After retiring from the military\, Karl returned to the farm and is building it back from scratch. He has been reevaluating the fundamentals and pivoting what he does to settle on what works. The goal is to produce healthy food for healthy people\, which for Karl starts in the soil. Come hear how Karl is grazing his cattle and using unique inputs like biochar to achieve his goals.

SUMMARY:PFI: Measuring and Interpreting Soil Health Benefits
DESCRIPTION:Will Cannon and his wife\, Cassie\, farm 1\,000 acres of strip-till corn and no-till soybeans near Prairie City\, Iowa. They use cover crops on a large scale and have reduced their applied commercial fertilizer rates. They also run a custom application and farming business\, along with a trucking company. Recently\, they started applying compost extract to their fields to feed their soil microbiology. Soil health practices have been a part of the Cannon farm for over two decades. \n  \nThey are now working with Top Soil and Agronomy365 to do fertilizer efficiency testing. The information is helping them quantify the benefits of their soil health practices while making data-driven decisions going forward. Join Will and Cassie at this field day for a deep dive into soil health sampling and what results from these tests mean on-farm.

SUMMARY:PFI: Grazing CRP for Beginning Farmers
DESCRIPTION:The Adam family has farmed their land near Harper\, Iowa\, since 1851. Eric and Madison Adam are trying to manage the ground with the next 175 years in mind. One of the tools they’re using is grazing land set aside in the Conservation Reserve Program. Eric believes that CRP is an investment in soil health as part of a long-term crop rotation. But taking land out of production can be a barrier to adoption. \n  \nOne lesser-known but useful way Eric and Madison are adding value to CRP is by taking advantage of a rule allowing penalty-free grazing by beginning farmers. At this field day\, we’ll learn more about this option and how it fits into the Adams’ operation. Though Eric says his acres and number of goats are on the smaller end\, he knows the ideas are useful for larger operations as well.

SUMMARY:PFI: Cleaning Water With Edge-of-Field Practices
DESCRIPTION:Jim O’Connell and his son\, Casey\, specialize in corn and soybeans at O’Connell Farms in Linn County\, Iowa. For the past 17 years\, Jim has planted cover crops green into both corn and beans on all his acres. His farming practices are focused on reducing nitrates from water that leaves his land. He uses a variety of edge-of-field practices\, like bioreactors and saturated buffers. He also has a 1.8-acre wetland. These practices have helped Jim cut nitrogen leaving his land by 70% – and recently earned him a Water Warrior award from the nonprofit Wings2Water. \n  \nJim also works closely with the city of Cedar Rapids to monitor water quality and with Iowa State University to monitor biodiversity on their farm and wetland. Join Jim and Casey as they show how they improve water quality within their watershed.

SUMMARY:PFI: Oxbows to Improve Water Quality
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, Selden Spencer purchased farmland along White Fox Creek in Hamilton County\, Iowa. The 100-acre property\, previously owned by Ray Fry\, is a mixture of cropland\, woodland\, ravines and riparian corridors. Ray still manages the property today. Before he sold the land\, Ray worked diligently alongside The Nature Conservancy to restore an oxbow along the creek. These U-shaped former stream bends remain one of the most effective ways to improve water quality on agricultural land. \n  \nSelden and Ray recognize the importance of oxbows and work together to maintain it. They also have plans for future conservation projects. At this field day\, be prepared to walk on uneven ground as Selden shares how oxbows help Iowa’s water quality and habitat. Bring a lawn chair for opening introductions as seating will be limited.

SUMMARY:PFI: Boosting a Farm’s Resiliency Through Cover Crops and Crop Rotations
DESCRIPTION:Ross McCaw began planting cover crops in 2019 to try to reduce his nitrogen inputs. He’s taking part in a nitrogen reduction trial through PFI’s on-farm research program to document the results. In 2023\, Ross started planting a three-crop rotation to raise more rye for seed and get all of the benefits of cover crops. He added plant growth regulators to achieve a healthier rye stand for harvesting. After the rye comes out\, he drills in a diverse cover crop mix. Ross is partnering with his landlord to graze his 25 cattle in the fall and has added a grazing mix to the rotation in one of his fields. \n  \nAt this field day\, you’ll see the diverse cover crop mix growing after the rye has been harvested\, and before the cattle graze it. We’ll also see a field planted in cover crops going into corn the following year.

SUMMARY:PFI: Using Data for Informed Decision-Making in Northwest Iowa
DESCRIPTION:Will Jones farms just under 3\,000 acres of row crops outside of Sioux Rapids\, Iowa. Data is central to how he makes management decisions for those acres. Will is in his third year of planting corn after corn on 90% of his acres based on the carbon scores in his soil. To sample soil\, he pulls cores from zones in his fields. He also does tissue sampling to get a snapshot of what’s going on in his fields\, adjusting his management plan accordingly. Will has planted triticale\, rye\, turnips and radishes for cover crops and now only plants winter camelina. \n  \nAt this field day\, we’ll see how this data fits together. We’ll visit fields that are a result of these practices and look at the equipment Will uses for strip-tilling. We’ll also view data from the soil and tissue sampling and discuss how it has informed Will’s decisions.

SUMMARY:PFI: Establishing Native Historical Prairie Through Targeted Seed Selection
DESCRIPTION:Jon Judson and his wife\, Kay Neumann\, own and operate Diversity Farms\, a sprawling 300-acre property comprising woodlands\, wetlands\, prairie and a small pasture for grass-fed beef as well as a small orchard. Over time\, Jon has reestablished prairie from remnant prairie\, emphasizing strong genetics for robust reconstructions. His passion has led to him to start his own business in prairie restoration. \n  \nFor this field day\, wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for uneven ground. Jon will show how it’s possible to create resilient prairie through targeted seed selection. He’ll also discuss opportunities for setting aside land into permanent easements and turning former cropland back into the habitat that existed historically.

SUMMARY:PFI: No-till\, Covers\, & Livestock
DESCRIPTION:Justin Wehling began farming in 2023 with a conventional approach. He is now making small changes and trialing different practices to improve the soil health on his land. Justin moved to no-till and is experimenting with roller-crimping. He is part of PFI’s N Rate Risk Protection Program to try to reduce his inputs. He is also getting livestock on his land by working with a neighbor who has cattle\, who’s now grazing Justin’s cover crops. \n  \nCome to this field day to experience a farm at the beginning of its cover crop and soil health regeneration journey. We’ll see cattle grazing a diverse cover crop mix and a trial for relay cropping. Justin will talk about what he’s learned from different practices he has tried and uses today. He’ll also discuss reducing inputs and costs\, and his plans for the future of his farm.
