SUMMARY:PFI: Conservation in Action on a Multigenerational Family Farm
DESCRIPTION:Ken Fawcett has been part of Fawcett Family Farms for decades. The operation\, in Cedar County\, Iowa\, is now run by Ken’s son\, Thomas\, and nephew\, Kent Stuart. But though retired\, Ken is still passionate about the legacy and stewardship of the family ground. Over the last 50 years\, Ken and his family have adopted a range of conservation practices\, such as no-till\, riparian buffers\, prairie restoration and cover crops. \n  \nEncouraged by soil health benefits and decreased soil erosion\, they strive to improve their land and stay profitable while preserving the environment for generations to come. Join Ken and his family at this field day to see their conservation efforts in action. They’ll share how they implement and manage practices\, and how they strive to work with the Iowa landscape to maintain a successful operation.

SUMMARY:PFI: Measuring and Interpreting Soil Health Benefits
DESCRIPTION:Will Cannon and his wife\, Cassie\, farm 1\,000 acres of strip-till corn and no-till soybeans near Prairie City\, Iowa. They use cover crops on a large scale and have reduced their applied commercial fertilizer rates. They also run a custom application and farming business\, along with a trucking company. Recently\, they started applying compost extract to their fields to feed their soil microbiology. Soil health practices have been a part of the Cannon farm for over two decades. \n  \nThey are now working with Top Soil and Agronomy365 to do fertilizer efficiency testing. The information is helping them quantify the benefits of their soil health practices while making data-driven decisions going forward. Join Will and Cassie at this field day for a deep dive into soil health sampling and what results from these tests mean on-farm.

SUMMARY:PFI: Using Data for Informed Decision-Making in Northwest Iowa
DESCRIPTION:Will Jones farms just under 3\,000 acres of row crops outside of Sioux Rapids\, Iowa. Data is central to how he makes management decisions for those acres. Will is in his third year of planting corn after corn on 90% of his acres based on the carbon scores in his soil. To sample soil\, he pulls cores from zones in his fields. He also does tissue sampling to get a snapshot of what’s going on in his fields\, adjusting his management plan accordingly. Will has planted triticale\, rye\, turnips and radishes for cover crops and now only plants winter camelina. \n  \nAt this field day\, we’ll see how this data fits together. We’ll visit fields that are a result of these practices and look at the equipment Will uses for strip-tilling. We’ll also view data from the soil and tissue sampling and discuss how it has informed Will’s decisions.

SUMMARY:PFI: No-till\, Covers\, & Livestock
DESCRIPTION:Justin Wehling began farming in 2023 with a conventional approach. He is now making small changes and trialing different practices to improve the soil health on his land. Justin moved to no-till and is experimenting with roller-crimping. He is part of PFI’s N Rate Risk Protection Program to try to reduce his inputs. He is also getting livestock on his land by working with a neighbor who has cattle\, who’s now grazing Justin’s cover crops. \n  \nCome to this field day to experience a farm at the beginning of its cover crop and soil health regeneration journey. We’ll see cattle grazing a diverse cover crop mix and a trial for relay cropping. Justin will talk about what he’s learned from different practices he has tried and uses today. He’ll also discuss reducing inputs and costs\, and his plans for the future of his farm.
