SUMMARY:PFI: Establishing Native Historical Prairie Through Targeted Seed Selection
DESCRIPTION:Jon Judson and his wife\, Kay Neumann\, own and operate Diversity Farms\, a sprawling 300-acre property comprising woodlands\, wetlands\, prairie and a small pasture for grass-fed beef as well as a small orchard. Over time\, Jon has reestablished prairie from remnant prairie\, emphasizing strong genetics for robust reconstructions. His passion has led to him to start his own business in prairie restoration. \n  \nFor this field day\, wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for uneven ground. Jon will show how it’s possible to create resilient prairie through targeted seed selection. He’ll also discuss opportunities for setting aside land into permanent easements and turning former cropland back into the habitat that existed historically.

SUMMARY:PFI: Cover Crops\, Cattle and Corn Cobs
DESCRIPTION:Nicole Vernon grew up on Monck Farms\, a 700-acre corn and soybean farm near Monticello\, Iowa\, where her parents emphasized sustainable farming and conservation practices. While at Iowa State University\, Nicole bought her own 100-acre farm\, raising corn\, soybeans and cattle. She uses no-till and cover crops\, and has restored prairie and wetlands. She has also partnered with ISU on water quality projects like using corn cobs as the carbon source in bioreactors to filter tile drainage water. Named the 2025 Iowa Conservation Woman of the Year\, Nicole shows how conservation and row-cropping can thrive together. \n  \nNicole is excited to have you join her at this field day to see how cover crops have extended forage opportunities for their cattle and paved the way to new practices\, like intercropping and more.

DESCRIPTION:On his fourth-generation farm near Red Oak\, Iowa\, Dave Carbaugh has done a lot since moving back 15 years ago. Across his 100 acres\, he has put in filter strips\, grassed waterways\, riparian forest buffers\, windbreaks\, a 10-acre pond and forage plantings\, building on work started by earlier generations. For many of these projects\, Dave has taken advantage of funding from the NRCS and expertise from other organizations. One of his goals is to “make the pastures right” so that successful management of his sheep flock will naturally follow. \n  \nCome see and learn about the improvements Dave has made\, as well as those that are in the works and ones on the docket. Dave will share how the changes contribute to his farm\, the process of establishing them and how to navigate what can be a complicated funding process.
