SUMMARY:PFI: Considering Cover Crops? Species\, Mixes and Support To Meet Your Farm’s Needs
DESCRIPTION:Eric Fara grew up in Shelby County\, Iowa\, where his family raised crops for seed and his grandpa ran a grain elevator through which he sold the seed. About 25 years ago\, they started raising wagyu cattle and grazing them on cover crops when possible. Eric felt a strong pull back to the farm after completing his education. To find his niche in the family operation\, he started doing custom cover crop application using the cleaned rye and oat seed. \n  \nCome to the Fara family’s field day to see plots of various cover crop species and mixes. You’ll hear about opportunities for cost-share to support adding cover crops. Eric is also excited to share how he has grown his custom seeding business to more than 1\,600 acres of cover crops\, plus some alfalfa and land in the Conservation Reserve Program.

SUMMARY:PFI: Sustaining a Legacy of Stewardship
DESCRIPTION:Rosmann Family Farms is a 700-acre certified organic farm that supports three generations of the Rosmann family with a mixture of corn\, soybeans\, popcorn\, small grains\, forages and pasture as well as cattle\, hogs and chickens. Across decades\, the Rosmanns have established a patchwork of 47 different fields throughout their whole farm. They are strong proponents of contour farming\, ridge-till and producing compost to fertilize their fields. \n  \nThe Rosmanns care deeply about continuing their legacy of stewardship\, advocating for practices and policies that support healthy farms and landscapes. Ron Rosmann will share a few words about his new book “A Practical Farmer’s Journey: A History of Community\, Stewardship and Resilience” before the family leads a tour of the farm and practices that inspired the publication.

SUMMARY:PFI: Making Conservation Programs Work for You
DESCRIPTION:On his fourth-generation farm near Red Oak\, Iowa\, Dave Carbaugh has done a lot since moving back 15 years ago. Across his 100 acres\, he has put in filter strips\, grassed waterways\, riparian forest buffers\, windbreaks\, a 10-acre pond and forage plantings\, building on work started by earlier generations. For many of these projects\, Dave has taken advantage of funding from the NRCS and expertise from other organizations. One of his goals is to “make the pastures right” so that successful management of his sheep flock will naturally follow. \n  \nCome see and learn about the improvements Dave has made\, as well as those that are in the works and ones on the docket. Dave will share how the changes contribute to his farm\, the process of establishing them and how to navigate what can be a complicated funding process.
