SUMMARY:PFI: Building a Seed Conditioning Business
DESCRIPTION:Ryan Tiefenthaler grew up helping on his family’s row crop and hog farm near Carroll\, Iowa. After college\, he returned to the farm to help his dad and started a custom application business for area farms. When an opportunity to raise fish fell through in 2016\, Ryan quickly pivoted his plans for the large facility he had purchased and started cleaning seed instead. \n  \nOver the past decade\, Ryan has grown his operation to meet the interest and demand of his partners and customers. Now with an array of conditioning equipment for both organic and conventional seed\, he has been able to step away from custom application and focus fully on cleaning seed from his own farm and from others. Come tour Ryan’s facility to get a close look at the steps for processing high-quality seed.

SUMMARY:PFI: Trying and Promoting Soil Health and Water Quality Practices in Northern Iowa
DESCRIPTION:Derek Young is a fourth-generation farmer who began farming in 1993 with his father and grandfather\, running a soybean\, corn and cattle operation. He strip-tills over half of his corn acres and no-tills most of his soybean acres while also maintaining conventional fields. He has covers flown on in the fall on over 1\,000 acres\, and drills rye on corn acres that are chopped for silage. \n  \nThis year\, Derek injected hog manure into his rye cover crop that’s going into corn\, and he’s hoping to cut back on nitrogen application in that field. Derek is also part of the Northwest Iowa Ag Stewardship Alliance\, a farmer-led group that promotes soil health and water quality in the region. DESCRIPTION:Catherine Schut owns and operates Hive and Petal\, a boutique flower farm in Prairie City\, Iowa\, focused on specialty blooms and honeybees. Catherine grows unique seasonal flowers\, from winter tulips and spring peonies to dried florals\, using thoughtful\, organically inspired practices that prioritize soil health and pollinators. \n  \nAt this field day\, Catherine will lead a walking tour of her flower farm. She’ll share how even small pockets of restored prairie can support both wild pollinators and her own beehives\, as well as soil health. We’ll also hear about the programs and partnerships Catherine has worked with over the years to establish prairie habitat\, and future plans for those partnerships as she expands her conservation practices. \n  \nRegistration for this field day is required.

SUMMARY:PFI: Starting a Cover Crop Business\, Flying Drones and Seeding Covers
DESCRIPTION:Mark and Brenda Kingland farm on 1\,700 acres in Winnebago County\, Iowa. Eight years ago\, they began strip-tilling to change efficiency in their fertilizer program and improve soil health. In 2022\, Mark added a drone on his farm to apply cover crops and do precision spraying. His goal is to have a cover crop mix flown on by early September into standing corn and soybeans. \n  \nMark’s son-in-law\, Stuart McCulloh\, and daughter\, Sara McCulloh\, have found their roles on the farm since moving back to the area in 2024. Stuart completed the Cover Crop Business Accelerator program through PFI last year and has found opportunities to use the drone to add diversity to the farm’s income. At this field day\, you’ll see drone demonstrations for different applications and gain insight to the systems approach of the operation.

SUMMARY:Organic Kernza\, Sunflowers and Oats: Seeking Financial and Agronomic Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Central Iowa farmers Caleb Akin and Noah Wendt began farming together through their partnership\, A & W Farms\, in 2006. They began transitioning acres to organic in 2015\, drawn by the higher prices of organic crops. As they have continued to transition more of their acres\, Caleb and Noah have come to appreciate opportunities to grow niche crops and decrease reliance on external inputs. \n  \nAs markets have become available\, Noah and Caleb have been able to grow crops beyond corn and soybeans\, such as oats\, sunflowers and Kernza. They also use cover crops and limit tillage whenever possible. Come to their field day to see their Kernza\, a perennial grain crop\, in its second season of growth. You’ll also see sunflowers growing for oil production and food-grade oats nearing or at harvest stage.

SUMMARY:PFI: Measuring and Interpreting Soil Health Benefits
DESCRIPTION:Will Cannon and his wife\, Cassie\, farm 1\,000 acres of strip-till corn and no-till soybeans near Prairie City\, Iowa. They use cover crops on a large scale and have reduced their applied commercial fertilizer rates. They also run a custom application and farming business\, along with a trucking company. Recently\, they started applying compost extract to their fields to feed their soil microbiology. Soil health practices have been a part of the Cannon farm for over two decades. \n  \nThey are now working with Top Soil and Agronomy365 to do fertilizer efficiency testing. The information is helping them quantify the benefits of their soil health practices while making data-driven decisions going forward.
