Gain a Better Understanding of How Nitrogen Practices Are Studied

Knowledge is power and Iowa State Extension and Outreach’s plan with the Nitrogen and Water Week program is to help farmers and agri-business. Therefore, ISU Extension and Outreach wants to help them gain a better understanding of how nitrogen practices are studied. This field day will also show farmers and agri-business how to manage N for profit and to reduce nitrate in tile drainage water.

As a result this program, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the challenges with monitoring water quality
  • Understand the measurements critical for characterizing nitrogen loss and crop production
  • Be knowledgeable of the approximate costs of establishing and, in addition, conducting drainage water quality studies
  • Know the range in N management practices that are being studied by ISU to support crop production and water quality
  • Give a relative rank of the effectiveness of the various N management practices in reducing N loss
  • Describe the pros and cons of trying to make major N loss reductions with nitrogen management

Think about how the above areas are vital to a watershed by watershed approach.

Especially relevant, be sure to join the nitrogen and water discussion discussion using the #NitrogenWeek tag on Twitter.
